VOLXkino 2025: These Films Vienna Can Look Forward To

For the 36th time, the VOLXkino is touring the districts of Vienna, bringing a diverse film program to parks, courtyards, and public squares. The opening of the 2025 summer season will take place on June 5th at 9 PM at the Karmelitermarkt in Leopoldstadt. This year, the schedule includes over 40 open-air screenings – with free admission.

Opening with Festival Film and New Collaboration with Vienna Festival

The season opens with the multi-award-winning comedy Universal Language, a cinematic reflection on time, space, and identity. New this year is a collaboration with the Viennale: under the title "GrätzlVIENNALE," selected films from the last festival will be shown together with the VOLXkino in various districts.

"The collaboration with the VOLXkino combines our passion for cinema with the desire to open it up," emphasizes Viennale director Eva Sangiorgi. It is about creating spaces for shared experiences – "moments of sharing, coming together, community."

Premieres, Short Films, and Socio-Political Accents

Other highlights of the program include two Austrian premieres: Shahid by Narges Kalhor, a genre mix from the Berlinale Forum 2024, as well as the debut Mit der Faust in die Welt schlagen by Constanze Klaue. Short and animated films, such as those featured in the Queertactics evening with award-winning entries from the Golden Medusa 2024, also find their place.

Domestic filmmaking is represented by works from Kurdwin Ayub (Mond), Bernhard Wenger (Pfau), Ruth Beckermann (Favoriten), and Alexandra Makarová (Perla). At Jodok-Fink-Platz, the theme "Politics of America" will be the focus on four evenings.

All of Vienna as a Unique Cinema Stage - Since the 90s

Since the 1990s, the VOLXkino has been turning urban spaces into temporary cinema stages. While initially focusing on Vienna's outer districts, the project now spans the entire city – from new urban development areas to established neighborhoods.

The VOLXkino is organized by the association of the same name, which implements over 60 events annually. In addition to the main format, the summer program 2025 also includes the KARLSkino, Science Fiction in the Park, and the Favoriten Film Festival Silent & Loud.
