A Lower Austrian who did not return from a prison leave managed to reach Denmark with a rental car from Lungau before being apprehended.

The 37-year-old had pretended to want to buy an expensive car at a Lungau car dealership, signed a purchase contract, and temporarily received a rental car, the police reported on Sunday.

Lower Austrian Fraudster Arrested in Denmark

The car dealer, however, contacted the police because there were discrepancies with the customer's personal details. During the investigation, officers discovered that the 37-year-old had rented accommodation in St. Michael im Lungau from July 10 under another identity and had not paid for it. It also turned out that the wanted man was a 37-year-old from Lower Austria who was supposed to serve a prison sentence in his home province for fraud offenses and had not returned from a leave.

Using the rental car's tracking system, the authorities traced the man's route through Germany to Denmark. The local police arrested the 37-year-old on Friday based on a European arrest warrant obtained by the Salzburg investigators. He is now in custody in Denmark. The initially known damage amounts to around 60,000 euros.
