Opening of the New Park Ruthnergasse in Vienna-Floridsdorf

The focus of the redesign is on climate adaptation, biodiversity, and inclusive recreational offerings. The popular flower and insect meadow has been retained as a central element and has been complemented by numerous new features – including 87 trees, a 700 m² playground with water play, as well as green pergolas and new seating areas.
Czernohorszky: "A place with quality of stay on hot days"
"Green spaces like these act like air conditioners in the city," explained Vienna's Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) at the opening. "The new park combines ecological diversity with modern recreational value. Especially on hot summer days, it becomes a place with high quality of stay – thanks to shade, greenery, and water play."
District Chairman Georg Papai (SPÖ) was also pleased: "With the new Ruthnergasse park, we are creating a meeting place for all Floridsdorf residents. I am particularly pleased that we were able to meet the wishes of many parents: The playground is barrier-free and inclusive – with a wheelchair swing and water play."
Natural habitat in Vienna-Floridsdorf for plants and animals
The existing flower meadow has been expanded: A newly heaped hill made of excavation material now serves as an additional viewing platform and flowering area. The meadow is mowed a maximum of twice a year to provide habitat, nesting, and overwintering opportunities for insects and small animals. In summer, the vegetation provides natural cooling through evaporation effects.
87 newly planted trees provide shade along with four pergolas. Three of the pergolas are covered with climbing plants, one shades the water feature. Visitors can take a seat on benches, individual seats, hammocks, and wooden decks. Two drinking fountains provide refreshment.
There are also improvements away from the lawns: The paths have been made barrier-free, a mobile toilet facility complements the infrastructure, and lighting ensures safety in the evening.
Playground with Water Fun and Inclusion
The 700 m² fenced playground offers a variety of play opportunities: climbing frame, inclusive play equipment such as a wheelchair swing, slides, seesaws, and a 30 m² water feature with a drinking fountain function. The offer is complemented by a table tennis table.
The redesign was based on a citizen participation process that also involved the youth center "Marco Polo". Wishes from the population – such as for a large climbing frame – were taken into account. The project was financed through the "Livable Climate Model City" funding program, which provides 20 million euros annually for climate adaptation measures.
