Vienna Climate Team Before Start in Josefstadt and Penzing

"The fight against the climate crisis can only succeed together. With the Vienna Climate Team, we manage to involve people where they live - directly in their neighborhood," says Vienna's Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky. "The results so far show: There is an enormous potential of good ideas among the population. We want to unearth this treasure together again this year and design the districts in a climate-friendly way with the people of Vienna."
Vienna Climate Team focuses more on mediation work
All Viennese who want to contribute to an environmentally friendly city can participate. Whether as an individual, association, or informal group - every idea is welcome. Starting in the fall of 2025, with the start of the next climate team cycle, proposals can be submitted. New is that the Vienna Climate Team is increasingly focusing on mediation work and outreach formats. "From the beginning, it was important to us that we not only reach those who are already eager and perhaps have been engaged in the city for a long time. But also to gather the ideas and opinions of people who have less time or fewer resources for it. Therefore, we will further expand participation formats that directly reach Viennese in their living environment," says Czernohorszky. Additionally, the content mediation work will be intensified: What steps can be taken in the neighborhood to reduce heat, reuse resources, or save energy? "In recent years, many great ideas have been submitted by Viennese. This shows how great the interest in co-designing the city of Vienna is," says Stefan Gara, NEOS Vienna Climate Spokesperson. "A multitude of projects has already been implemented. We are therefore very pleased that the Vienna Climate Team will continue in 2025 and that the 8th and 14th districts are now part of this innovative project."
Anticipation in Josefstadt and Penzing for Vienna Climate Team
"Josefstadt thrives on the commitment of its residents. I am particularly pleased that the Vienna Climate Team is now making a stop in our district. It offers the residents of Josefstadt a great opportunity to directly contribute their ideas, wishes, and ideas for a better climate in our dense, urban environment," says Martin Fabisch, District Chairman of Josefstadt. Michaela Schüchner, the District Chairwoman of Penzing, is also pleased that the 14th district is part of the climate team. "Penzing is a diverse district with urban life, a lot of natural space, and committed people. The Vienna Climate Team is a wonderful opportunity to utilize this diversity and take concrete steps against the climate crisis together. I am very pleased that all residents of Penzing can now actively participate and have a say in this way."
Vienna Climate Team: From Idea to Project
The special feature of the Vienna Climate Team is that the submitted ideas are further developed into concrete projects together with experts and residents. In each district, citizen juries are used – a randomly selected group of residents who ultimately make recommendations on which projects should be implemented. In the last three years, Viennese, together with experts, have developed a total of 282 projects from about 4,000 ideas for Margareten (5th), Mariahilf (6th), Alsergrund (9th), Simmering (11th), Meidling (12th), Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (15th), Ottakring (16th), Währing (18th), and Floridsdorf (21st). So far, the citizen juries have selected 53 projects from these and proposed them for implementation. Currently, the citizen juries for districts 9, 12, and 15 are meeting. At the end of June, the selected projects will be presented. More information about the Vienna Climate Team can be found here.
